Cj (Cindi)'s Story
I dropped out of school in 77 to get married, the first in a series of personally disastrous mistakes. I was (if I say so myself) brilliant in English but a dismal failure in math. Unfortunately the older I got the harder the math got, and you can't graduate without math credits, so I gave up. I did get my GED in 82, but just barely.
Married life at 17 was strange, crazy, wild and terrifying. There was a lot of partying and vagabond traveling. My first husband was basically a very tall, angry child. I supported us both for 6 years with a series of menial labor jobs, until I finally figured out that things were not going to get any better, and I left him and went back home.
I free-wheeled it for a couple of years until I met my second husband...Expand for more
. We married in 83 and had our first child in 86, the second in 89 and the third in 90. We grew apart and ended up divorced in 08 but are still close friends.
I started writing in 01, and wrote a weekly column for several newspapers. I tried my hand at journalism but had no stomach for hard news and research. I wrote many freelance feature articles for both newspaper and magazine, all the while determined to publish a novel, which happened this year. A second novel is in edits at this moment. A third book "Ghosts of Interstate 10" is supposed to be out later this month.
Looking back, and despite all the mistakes, I can't say that there's much I'd change about my life. As tough as it was, it made me who I am today, and I guess I'm doing okay.
